Biliterals are hieroglyphs which were substituted
in place of pairs of alphabet characters. The sound of the biliteral
hieroglyph is the same as the sound of the the alphabet characters it
replaces. Biliterals 'streamline' writings by eliminating large numbers
of simpler characters.
